The metabolic syndrome is a cluster of risk factors for cardiovascular disease that includes abdominal obesity, dyslipidemia, elevated blood pressure, and impaired glucose tolerance. Up to 50 million persons in the United States are believed to be affected by the metabolic syndrome. Efforts to reduce cardiovascular morbidity and mortality in at-risk individuals hinge on early identification and initiation of treatment for the individual components of the syndrome. In this series, clinicians from a range of disciplines review the diagnosis and management of the metabolic syndrome and closely examine factors involved in its pathogenesis (stress, obesity, lack of physical activity, genetics) and pathophysiology (glucose intolerance, inflammation and endothelial dysfunction).
